The Lehigh Valley: A Vortex of Pollen Problems for Allergy Sufferers?

Ask anyone in the LINC office or anyone who sees me on a regular basis, and they’ll all confirm: I have more than a bit of experience with allergies. If I were one of Snow White’s seven dwarves, I’d be Sneezy. I’m allotted one “bless you” in the morning and one in the afternoon, because otherwise, I’d tire everyone out. What I didn’t know prior to moving to the Lehigh Valley is that it consistently ranks in the top 100 “allergy capitals” of America; Allentown ranked 59th most challenging place to live with spring allergies and 19th most challenging place to live with asthma in 2015.

All About Pennsylvania Taxes

The Lehigh Valley continues to experience substantial growth that is attracting new entrepreneurs, employees, and residents every year. As the excitement of relocating settles, the reality of filing taxes in a new state sets in. Few states use a flat tax, however Pennsylvania (PA) is one of them, at 3.07%. Most of PA’s taxable income is derived from compensation, interest, dividends, business profits, and rental income, which are all taxed at the flat rate. Since there is no standard deduction or deduction for dependents, it is important to understand that certain exemptions and deductions exist.

Buying a Home: Lessons Learned

Rent versus buy. It’s an age old question that people have asked for centuries and will continue to ask. Home ownership is part of the American dream and provides many benefits, along with some headaches at times (“Honey, when are you going to replace that water heater?”) In most circumstances, buying a home just makes more sense, especially if you are going to live in it for at least five years.

March Madness

My wife thinks I am crazy, and I will confess – she may be right. Playing basketball well into my seventh decade does seem a bit unusual. However, it is more of an addiction than a psychosis. You see, there is something about the game – the teamwork, competition and camaraderie – that took hold of me many years ago and won’t release me from its grasp. Maybe it’s the subtlety of a no-look pass, the sublimity of a well-executed pick and roll or the sensuousness of a crisp “swish” when an arcing three-pointer hits its mark. Whatever the reason, the game is alluring and continues to fascinate me.

Parking Spot Saving: A Time-Honored Lehigh Valley Tradition

Urban newcomers, especially those of you from warmer climes, if this is your first winter in the Lehigh Valley, you might be wondering what would compel people to place their recycling bins and folding chairs in the parking lane on your street. It's because in the Lehigh Valley, if someone cleared that space of snow and ice, they probably think they are entitled to park there until the snow melts.

Embracing Winter!

Perhaps I am a little biased, but hear me out. I love winter, and I particularly love winter in the Lehigh Valley. I may come by my love of winter naturally. After all, I was born and raised in Canada. I may have nurtured my love of winter during the 17 years I lived in Michigan. Whichever it is, I’ve learned that when the weather turns cold and the skies turn grey, it is time to bundle up and enjoy!

Bridging the Gap of Diversity Through Community

As the saying goes “variety is the spice of life”, but when it comes to the workplace it seems that diversity has more obstacles, struggles, and failures than successes. First is the definition disconnect. Merriam-Webster defines diversity as “the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas etc.” In my research I found there are now notable differences in its meaning among businesses, generations, cultures and races. If we cannot agree on what it is, then how do we begin to address it?

Making Connections

Connection - a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else. Moving to a new area means having to make new connections. For some that is easy, for some not so much and for some it is truly difficult. Don’t Drink the Water?

There is no question too simple or too complicated for the team here at LINC. Recently one of our clients asked us if the water was safe to drink out of the tap. For those of us who have lived in the region for a few years, it seems obvious, but for a newcomer to the region, this and many other questions is pretty important, and if you don't know your neighbors or colleagues well yet, you might not want to ask them. But that's exactly why we're here. Here are a few other FAQs and, more importantly, our answers, that might help you and your family acclimate.
