New Year, New You

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always thought the new year brings an exciting energy with it – the energy from having a blank slate, the energy from imagining what’s to come, the energy from knowing this is another year you can make the most of.

A lot of people make New Year’s resolutions inspired by this energy, and whether your resolutions involve getting active or trying new things, if you’re in need of ideas for where to start, here are some local resources that can help you do just that. 


Resolution: get active
  • Nouansavanh Thai Boxing

    Nouansavanh Thai Boxing

    Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) at Nouansavanh Thai Boxing in Phillipsburg is a fun workout like no other. Your heart will race and you'll sweat profusely as you learn combos and constantly push yourself, and before you know it, class will have flown by. Classes consist of students of all ages and levels, from complete novices to seasoned fighters who have even trained in Thailand. Everyone is extremely friendly and Kru (the Thai word for teacher) Dennis is a great teacher. Just one word of advice: don't eat a heavy meal before class.

    St. Luke's Health Network Fitness & Sports Performance

    Voted "Best Gym for Working Out and Best Gym Atmosphere" by Lehigh Valley Style Magazine, take a look around any of their locations and you'll quickly see that they are entirely deserving of the honor. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, free fitness assessments come with any membership, and the environment is always clean, welcoming, and encouraging.


Resolution: get outdoors
  • L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School

    The L.L. Bean at the Promenade Shops at Center Valley offers exciting classes such as guided hikes, trail clean-ups, and moonlight kayak trips.

  • Get Your Tail on the Trail

    St. Luke’s University Health Network (St. Luke’s) and Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L) have partnered to bring the community a family fun initiative — Get Your Tail on the Trail! The “trail” is the nearly continuous 165-mile multi-use D&L Trail which begins near Wilkes-Barre in the mountains of northeast Pennsylvania, and follows three historic transportation systems (the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Lehigh Canal, and the Delaware Canal) on route to Bristol, PA just outside of Philadelphia. By logging the miles you've biked, walked, rowed, etc. you can win fun prizes, and those miles aren't limited to the D&L Trail! You can log miles you've racked up anywhere, even on cardio equipment at the gym.


Resolution: try new things
  • Monthly Adventure Destination (MAD) Group

    Monthly Adventure Destination (MAD) Group

    The Monthly Adventure Destination (MAD) Group generally meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month to get together and try new and exciting things. February's adventure is to the Martin Guitar Factory, Museum, and Visitor Center in Nazareth. For more information about the event and group, email Marie Arnold.

  • Local life enrichment classes

    Whether you'd like to learn to cook healthy, try a Latin dance class, or brush up on your high school French, it's very likely a public library or community college near you offers such programs. Northampton Community College, for example, always has a wide offering of life enrichment classes across its Bethlehem, Easton, and Monroe campuses.
