Looking to fill your calendar with fun events this spring? The Lehigh Valley offers a wide variety of activities for all to enjoy. Here are some of my personal favorites!
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is only a short thirty-minute drive away. A “water gap” is a geological feature where a river cuts through a mountain ridge. In this case, the Delaware River cuts through a large section of the Appalachian Mountains, home to the famous Appalachian Trail. A lot of different recreational activities are available here, including rafting, canoeing, swimming, fishing and rock climbing. During the springtime there is nothing better than a morning hike on one of the many trails. My favorite is the Red Dot Trail (a little challenging) to the top of Kittatinny Ridge, and then returning on the Blue Dot Trail. Another popular (and easier) choice is a hike to Sunfish Pond, a 44-acre glacial lake surrounded by a 258-acre hardwood forest. Whatever you choose to do, you will be impressed with the scenic views of this 67,000-acre National Recreational Area.
Then there is music! In Bethlehem, the Levitt Pavilion offers 50 FREE shows every summer with the opening Memorial Day weekend. The pavilion is located at the base of the steel stacks in Bethlehem which are a monument to the once famous Bethlehem Steel whose buildings sprawled along the Lehigh River. The expansive lawn in front of the stage allows patrons to bring their own lawn chairs, perhaps a picnic supper and maybe even their dog for a relaxing and enjoyable night of live music. Parking is free and there are plenty of rest rooms and food choices if you would like to buy dinner there. The season’s preview event will be held at the Banana Factory in South Bethlehem on Tuesday, April 18th starting at 7:00 P.M. Patrick Brogan, Vice President of Artsquest will lead a presentation of the various artists that will be performing and offering hints of his favorite acts- those “not to miss”. This event is also free and no tickets are required. Come join the fun all summer long.
Spring is the perfect time to head down to the Li'l-Le-Hi Trout Nursery at 2901 Fish Hatchery Road in Allentown from 7:00 A.M. to dusk daily. Here you will find large tanks of fish in the center of a beautiful park- a perfect outing on a beautiful day. This is a great place to take the kids or just walk around with a friend or loved one. It's not very big but you can spend hours sitting alongside the fish tanks just watching them swim around. You can also feed the fish for a small cost (definitely recommend it) and the little store located in the park is quite interesting.
I hope that my insight was helpful in navigating all the fun springtime activities that the Lehigh Valley has to offer!
